Bucknell integrates TurnItIn’s "originality checking" service into our Moodle installation. If a faculty member adds a "TurnItIn Assignment" to a course, student submissions to that assignment are checked against TurnItIn’s database of previously submitted work and of documents submitted to other Internet-based publishing venues. TurnItIn produces an "originality report" for each submitted essay that indicates how similar the language of the student essay is to essays contained in the TurnItIn database.
An additional feature of TurnItIn is GradeMark, which allows faculty members to provide inline and summary comments about the student essay, viewable on the TurnItIn server. The method of finding those comments is neither straightforward nor intuitive, so here are instructions on how a student can find his/her professor’s GradeMark comments on a TurnItIn assignment:
- Within the Moodle course that has the assignment, click on the link for the assignment – the same link you used to submit the assignment in the first place.
- In the middle of the page will be a "[SUBMIT]" link. Even though you have already submitted the assignment, click on that "[SUBMIT]" link.
- You will be taken to your "Class Homepage" and "Assignment Inbox." On the far-right side of the page, click on the blue "View" button:
- You will be taken to the GradeMark page for the assignment. On the right side of the screen will be a "General Comments" section that may have your professor’s summary comments about your submission. On the left side of the screen is an image of the assignment you submitted, along with any additional inline comments your professor provided.
- You may also see a grade for your assignment in the top-right corner of the page. You can close out the GradeMark pop-up window when you have finished reviewing your professor’s comments.
