Summer 2017
Deadlines for Applications: March 20, 2017 9:00 AM
In support of the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on Integrating Open Educational Resources and Residential Learning, Library & Information Technology, invites faculty members to submit proposals for creating open educational resources (OERs) to support their teaching. OERs are freely accessible (usually via the web), openly licensed documents and media that are useful for teaching, learning, and assessing as well as for research purposes.
A summer stipend of $500 or $1000 (based on level of work) will be awarded to faculty who will produce materials that can be used in their own courses and also made available for others outside of Bucknell to use, remix, tweak, and build upon. These grants focus on open educational resources and course development initiatives, not equipment acquisition.
Possible types of proposal include:
- the creation of an open textbook in an ebook format to be used by students and shared with the wider academic community without barriers
- establishing a collection of open course materials to be used in your teaching and shared with the wider academic community without barriers
- developing an open pedagogy assignment that you will implement in the upcoming academic year
Grant recipient(s) will partner with a digital pedagogy specialist and a librarian during development and implementation. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis. Maximum grant amount is $1000 for faculty stipend. Most projects are expected to be completed by September 2017.
Procedure
Please email your proposal to Susan Musser (sam053@bucknell.edu) by 9:00 AM, March 20th, 2017. Proposals will be reviewed by the Office of the Vice President for Library & Information Technology. Please contact Matt Gardzina, Director of Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship (matt.gardzina@bucknell.edu) or Kathleen McQuiston, Director of Research Services and Information Literacy (kathleen.mcquiston@bucknell.edu) with any questions regarding the grant or the application process.
Requirements for Proposals
Please include all of the following sections in your proposal. We appreciate submissions that do not exceed three pages double-spaced.
- A brief description of the proposed project and how using open educational resources will benefit your teaching and student learning.
- A statement about how you intend to leverage a digital pedagogy specialist and librarian in your project.
- A proposed work plan including an estimate of the number of days or weeks to be devoted to the project during summer 2017.
- A written commitment to share the materials you develop outside of Bucknell. We suggest a commitment to license your materials under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA) or Creative Commons Zero license.
- A listing of any course development funds you have received in the past five years and if you have been granted course development funds this year.
Applicants are requested to list all summer commitments. Other employment, including summer school, contractual summer stipends, or other stipends awarded by the Faculty Development Committee (including research grants) may impact funding. The reviewers will consider time demands associated with other summer commitments and the impact those time demands may have on the ability to complete the project by the end of the summer.
End-of-grant responsibilities
Grant recipients agree to share the materials they create outside of Bucknell (preferably adopting a CC BY-NC-SA or Zero license); agree to allow L&IT to showcase their materials at internal Bucknell and external events; provide a brief one-page report on their project that may be published on L&IT webpages; and may present at internal Bucknell events.
