Brianna Healey Derr, a member of the ITEC staff in the role of Instructional Technologist, specializing in video, recently completed coursework to earn a certificate in Digital Storytelling. The Digital Storytelling Certificate Program was created through a collaboration between the Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS) and the University of Colorado, Denver. The program is designed to help individuals and organizations learn the skills necessary for successfully carrying out digital storytelling projects. A digital story defined by the CDS is a first-person narrative account of an event or life experience that had a role in shaping or changing one’s life. The story is told via digital media such as film, music, photographs, etc.
Brianna has already started to introduce what she studied into several course projects. (See the related blog post, Digital Storytelling in the Curriculum.) As an example of Digital Storytelling, Brianna has shared two digital stories that she produced as part of her professional development and course work (embedded below). Visitation Dreams tells the emotionally powerful story of a “visitation dream” from her deceased grandmother, and Journey to Bucknell, which she produced for her most recent certification course, relates Brianna’s path to her current position as Video Specialist. Please contact Brianna if you want to learn more about digital storytelling or if you are interested in having students create a digital story as a course assignment.
