As I mentioned in my detailed instructions on how to copy courses from our Moodle Archive Server to our main Moodle Server, the “Restore” part of the process requires the most careful attention. During that “Restore” process, you need to drag the backup file onto the appropriate window on the “Import a backup file” page, and you need to make sure that you are merging the contents of the backup file into the current version of your course. You also need to correct the “Course name” and “Course short name” values so that they refer to the current semester’s course, rather than to the past course.
The restore process involves the following more advanced computer skills:
- Downloading a file from Moodle and finding the file in your typical downloads folder;
- Keeping two windows open on your computer;
- Switching between active and inactive program windows, and;
- Dragging a file between windows and dropping it onto a Web page.
Because that process can be confusing, we have created the following video to explain those crucial steps:
Please note that you do not need to open the Moodle backup file at any part of this process. Once you have downloaded the backup file from the previous version of the course, you just need to drag that file into the “Import a backup file” window. The video (just above) demonstrates that process.
Please contact ITEC if you have any questions about this process.
