Library and IT has a sound-proof Audio Booth that you can use to record audio tracks for videos, podcasts, etc. The Audio Booth features a high-quality Shure microphone connected to a Macintosh computer. You use a program called Audacity, installed on that computer, to record your sound file(s).
You can find the Audio Booth on the main floor of the Library, in the far-left corner, near the printers. Enter the main door of the Library, head to the left of the central staircase, continue past the Tech Desk, and continue towards the back-left corner, between the printers and the emergency exit, to arrive at the Audio Booth:
On your way to the Audio Booth – before you pass the Library Cafe – you’ll need to stop at the Equipment Desk to check out the key to the booth.
We recommend working in pairs, with one person controlling the computer and the other person recording the audio track(s). If you suffer from claustrophobia, we recommend that you be the person controlling the computer. You can use the equipment alone, but you would then need to begin the recording in Audacity before entering the sound-proof booth. Once you have recorded your sound file(s), you will most likely need to edit those files, which you can do using Audacity or other audio editing programs.
For instructions on how to use Audacity to record audio clips, see our Tech Tips Episode 3 – Audio Booth and Audacity (embedded just below):
