Our current version of Moodle – Moodle 2.8 – changed the interface for how you set up your Gradebook and choose weights for your weighting scheme. Instead of clicking on a drop-down menu to choose Categories and Items and then Full View, you can now just click on the Setup tab (after your click on the link for the Gradebook in the “Course administration” area), among other changes.
We have updated our instructions for weighting grades in Moodle to reflect the changed interface.
There are many advantages to using the Moodle Gradebook. For example:
- Once you set up the weighting scheme, Moodle will calculate your course grades for you.
- Each student can see his/her grades for the course (that you enter into the Gradebook) by clicking on a “Grades” link.
- Moodle allows you to create grade categories, and it will automatically calculate the grade for the category based on the weighting scheme you choose.
- You can tell Moodle to drop the lowest grade or grades in a category when calculating those category grades, allowing Moodle (for example) to drop the lowest quiz score(s) or homework score(s).
We explain how to add categories and items to your Moodle Gradebook, how to create a typical weighting scheme, and how to drop the lowest grade(s) in a category in the Weighting Grades in Moodle help sheet.
