Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship at Bucknell is an eleven-member team with diverse educational backgrounds and interests. Among our team members are four Ph.Ds, a professional photographer, a former prep school teacher turned technologist, a GIS practitioner for a nonprofit, a former vice president at HBO, an actor and Americorp and Peace corp volunteers. Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship is part of Library & Information Technology and housed in Bertrand Library, the heart of academic life on campus.
Mission: To partner with faculty to drive the effective integration of technology to enhance teaching, learning and research.

Deb is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology with a BA in Photo Illustration and Photojournalism. She came to Bucknell as the University Photographer, a role she held for 10 years. After this time her role evolved to Graphic Specialist and Instructional Technologist, working with faculty using a variety technologies to enhance their teaching and research. Currently, Deb focuses on digital media in Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship. In this role she develops and delivers workshops for faculty and students on how to use digital media and specific software including Final Cut, iMovie, and Photoshop. In addition she investigates and explores new technologies and their application in higher education.

Brianna Derr, Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship Specialist for Video

Originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania, Brianna earned her BA from Penn State in Film/Video Communications and has been working as a freelance editor and videographer in recent years and also served as Director of Film Programming for Box of Light, a digital arts studio located in Bloomsburg, PA. Brianna received her certificate in Digital Storytelling in the Spring of 2014 from the University of Colorado Denver in partnership with The Center for Digital Storytelling now called StoryCenter. Brianna works with students and faculty to integrate video and digital media into the course curriculum. Matt is responsible for providing leadership, direction, planning, and oversight for the wide-range of outreach, consultation, instruction and support programs of the Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship team. Beyond Bucknell Matt served on the Program Committee for EDU-PLACE, organizing online seminars for academic technologists and reference librarians at nearly seventy small, residential, liberal arts colleges (2014-2015). He is currently serving a 3-year term on the Educause Learning Initiative (ELI) Liberal Arts College Advisory Group.
A native of the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts, Matt came to Bucknell from The College of Wooster where he served as the Director of Instructional Technology. Prior to his time at Wooster he managed the Academic Technology group within Information Technology Services at Washington & Jefferson College. From 2004-2006 he served as an Academic Technology Consultant in the Center for Instructional Technology at Duke University, where he helped implement the Duke iPod project. Before his arrival at Duke, he was a faculty member at Cary Academy, an independent school in North Carolina established by the founders of SAS software as a model school for the integration of technology and learning. He also helped establish a technology program for Wake County high school students. Matt is a 2016 Leading Change Institute Fellow. He earned a B.A. in history from St. Lawrence University and an M.A. in European history from The Catholic University of America.

Janine Glathar, Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship Specialist for GIS

Janine Glathar joined ITEC/Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship in 2009 to fill the newly-created role of GIS Specialist at Bucknell. She has worked in the field of geospatial technologies for more than 15 years as research specialist, technical analyst and software trainer. Prior to joining L&IT at Bucknell, Janine spent seven years doing applied GIS research in Philadelphia’s non-profit social services sector as the GIS Senior Analyst for Philadelphia Safe & Sound and the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition. Before transitioning to the social services research world, Janine worked for the GIS software company ESRI as a trainer and education/non-profit coordinator. She earned a B.A. in European History and Russian Language/Literature at the University of Pennsylvania. If you ask Janine where she’s from, she’ll tell you she’s a Navy brat and will probably offer to show you a map of all of the various places she’s lived over the years.

Leslie Harris, Digital Pedagogy Specialist

Leslie began his professional career as an assistant professor of English at Susquehanna University, specializing in computers and writing and in what was known at the time as “humanities computing” (now more commonly referred to as the “digital humanities”). After three years as an assistant professor, he changed careers, becoming the Instructional Technology Coordinator at Plattsburgh State University of New York. Since that time, he served as Decker Chair of Instructional Technology at Goucher College, as the Coordinator of the Technology Across the Curriculum Program at George Mason University, and as an instructional technologist at the University of Scranton, before arriving at Bucknell in March 2006. Originally from New York, Leslie has lived in Connecticut, France (in 1983-1984), California, Virginia, and now Pennsylvania. Leslie has a B.A. in English from Yale University and a Ph.D. (also in English) from the University of California, Berkeley.

Diane Jakacki, Digital Scholarship Coordinator

Diane joined the Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship department in 2013 (then ITEC). Her areas of specialization include the ways in which pedagogy can be transformed by means of digital interventions, digital humanities praxis – particularly spatial analysis through text. She is an assistant director of the Digital Humanities Summer Institute, Program Chair for the DH 2017 international conference, Technical Editor for the Internet Shakespeare Editions, a member of the Executive Board of the Records of Early English Drama and the pedagogical advisory board for Map of Early Modern London project. She has published widely on digital humanities pedagogy as well as on the intersection of DH and early modern studies. Diane received her BA in English and History from Lafayette College, an MA in English from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Waterloo, specializing in Early Modern Theatre and Multimedia Theory and Design. Prior to joining Bucknell, Diane was a Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

After 16 years of service as administrative assistant for the Blough-Weis Library, Susquehanna University, Susan started at Bucknell University in 2014 as the Bertrand Library Research Services Assistant. Currently she acts as Library Services Assistant, providing support for L&IT Academic Services and Bertrand Library operations.
Susan earned a B.A. in Speech Communications, with a minor in Religion, from Susquehanna University.
Luyang Ren, GIS/Web Application Specialist

Before joining Bucknell, Luyang was a project lead at Clark Labs/IDRISI as a GIS Software Programmer for two years while she was pursuing her M.S. in Geographic Information Science for Development and Environment at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Luyang started learning GIS and computer programming skills in her undergraduate study and decided to work for GIS application development coding as her career. She is originally from China and earned her B.E. in Geomatics Engineering in China.

Todd collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to explore and implement emerging technologies that may foster new modes of learning and scholarship at Bucknell. Most recently, Todd was a CLIR Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Curation at the University of Alberta. At U of A he worked with humanities computing researchers and students on a number of projects in web archives, data curation, and online culture. Todd earned a B.A. in Philosophy and English from Yale University, a M.I.S., in Information Science from The University of Michigan Ann Arbor and a Ph.D. in Communication and Information Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Jeff Tolbert, Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship Specialist

Jeff holds a Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University. He studies supernatural belief and is also very interested in the interplay between “popular” and “traditional” cultures. As an ethnographer, Jeff has conducted fieldwork in Ireland and digital fieldwork relating to the Internet monster known as Slender Man. Prior to coming to Bucknell, he most recently served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Baltimore, where he taught courses in Anthropology. Jeff coordinates Digital Pedagogy & Scholarship’s outreach and communication efforts with faculty especially regarding digital scholarship.
